Objectives: At the completion of this course, the reader should be able to: 1. Describe the basic physiology involved in pain impulse transmission and pain perception. 2. Identify the role of specific neurotransmitter receptors and their use in transmission and interpretation of acute pain. 3. Identify traditional and contemporary pain management pharmacology. 4. Describe the mechanism of action of specific pharmacology as it relates to the pain impulse transmission and interpretation. 5. Synthesize practical pain management modalities to provide the optimal safety and comfort for perioperative patients.
